Parents play a major role in helping students excel in school.  Please encourage your children to read, read, read! Help them develop a love for reading by taking them to the county library, book stores, reading every night for at least 20 minutes, reading to them and with them.  Let them see you reading a book for pleasure!  All of these things send the message that reading is important.

Digging Into the Data

School Grades 2018

The Florida Department of Education released 2017-18 school grades last week.  "I was very disappointed to see our school grade drop from an A to a C," said Mrs. Spence.  "Understanding the data is important to identify where we are strong and where we need to do more work to bring the school back up to an A.   First of all, I want to congratulate our students and staff for sharing the number one spot in the district with Butler Elementary for percent of students scoring on or above grade level in Reading and Math.  Though our students scored high in proficiency and our highest performing students made significant learning gains, our lowest quartile students did not which is how our school grade dropped.  We must address this so all students get the support they need to ensure learning gains for all on FSA.  I have been digging into the data since the release of grades last week and hope the following information answers some questions for our parents and community,” said Mrs.  Spence.

Just a little background, the FLDOE began calculating learning gains of all students and learning gains of the lowest quartile students on the FSA in 2016.  “Because Bay Elementary School scores high in proficiency (on grade level or above) some of our lowest 25% of students may actually be on or above grade level yet not score showing one full year’s growth,” said Mrs. Spence.

Here are the facts:

 MATH

78% of all 3rd & 4th graders at Bay Elementary School scored a level 3 or above on FSA indicating on or above grade level

52% of all 4th graders who took the FSA in 3rd grade at Bay Elementary School demonstrated learning gains on FSA as defined by the FLDOE FSA Score Achievement Levels Scale.  62% of students who scored a Level 4 or 5 made learning gains compared to only 8% of students who scored a Level 1 or 2 who made learning gains.  54% of students who scored a level 3 made learning gains.

38% of students who are identified among the lowest 25% of 4th graders at Bay Elementary School demonstrated learning gains on FSA as defined by the FLDOE FSA Score Achievement Levels Scale

READING

77% of all 3rd & 4th graders at Bay Elementary School scored a level 3 or above on FSA indicating on or above grade level

47% of all 4th graders who took the FSA in 3rd grade at Bay Elementary School demonstrated learning gains on FSA as defined by the FLDOE FSA Score Achievement Levels Scale.   71% of students who scored a Level 4 or 5 made learning gains compared to only 5% of students who scored a Level 1 or 2 who made learning gains.

20% of students who are identified among the lowest 25% of 4th graders at Bay Elementary School demonstrated learning gains on FSA as defined by the FLDOE FSA Score Achievement Levels Scale.

In addition to identifying the need to support the lowest quartile in learning gains, data also indicated a need to improve writing in 4th grade.  Therefore, you can expect to see more writing assignments in the coming year.

For continual improvement, Bay Elementary School develops a School Improvement Plan each year which serves as a blue print for identifying areas of need and plan to improve.  The plan includes measurable goals for school accountability as well as continued improvement.  The School Advisory Council serves as an integral part of the plan.  All SAC meetings are open to the public should you want to learn more and be involved in the continual improvement process at Bay Elementary School.
